About Our Guest House

The Peace Guest House opened in September 1998.
It is quiet, nestled  on the banks of Lake Kivu and surrounded by trees and wildlife. In the mornings the songs of Rwandan folklore come up from the lake as the morning fog lifts, the fishermen celebrating a successful nights work. The days are filled with cool lake breezes. As the sun sets over the Congo, pinks and purples fill the lake and sky. Then night comes again, the lights from the Congo mesh with the fishermen's lanterns and the stars to make a beautiful twinkling display. The guest house is a place for refreshment.

You will find our staff friendly, ready to greet you and offer services any way they can.

When you stay at PGH your money goes further. When you book a room with us, the profits go to projects of the Anglican Church including several schools, a feeding and education program on Nkombo Island (Rwanda's poorest region), church planting in rural Rwanda and paying pastors.

Rwanda today:

Rwanda is in East Africa, just south of the equator, surrounded by Uganda, the Congo, Burundi and Tanzania. Along this latitude it is warm all year and light between 6.00 am and 6.00 pm. It is usually sunny with some short but heavy showers in the spring and autumn rainy seasons.
It is a land of great beauty, with forests, lakes and mountains. The towns are few and far between, but there are numerous small villages and settlements as the vast majority of the population live off the land. The main roads linking the towns are moderately good, but beware the potholes. The minor roads are more of an adventure and will test the suspension of the vehicle and its occupants. (4 X 4 vehicles essential)
There are hotels in the towns which provide clean, en-suite rooms and simple but appetizing menus. The shops provide the necessities. However Rwanda is not yet established on the tourist map so these facilities are limited.
There is a rich abundance of flora and fauna. Each particular landscape has its own range of wildlife. Amateurs and professionals alike will enjoy this aspect of their holiday. You must bring binoculars and cameras with you.
The people of the country will extend a warm welcome. Life outside the towns is much as it has been for hundreds of years. You will find this interesting, but at the same time it will underline the poverty and hardship of many of the inhabitants.
Rwanda has few natural resources other than its beauty, making tourism a essential for the economy. Places of interest include Volcanoes National Park, Nyungwe National Forrest to see gorillas, Akagera National Park for a safari, Lake Kivu, and the genocide memorial in Kigali.

Our History

Rwanda is, sadly, most associated with the genocide of 1994. In only a few months nearly 100,000 people were killed.
Rwanda has grown increasingly peaceful in the last 20 years, stunning the world with its development.
